Superintendent's Message

Greetings and Welcome to the 2019-20 school year!

For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Jon Ray and I am your new Superintendent. I am humbled to lead a wonderful group of educators and work with such an incredible community. Additionally, I am incredibly excited about this up and coming school year.

A little about myself…I was born and raised in Weed, California and I have served in California's public school system for 25 years. I’ve held the positions of coach, classroom teacher, Vice Principal, Principal, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Superintendent/Principal and Superintendent. I attended Junior College at College of the Siskiyous and transferred to CSU, Sacramento where I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Social Science. After pursuing a career as a commodities broker, I decided to go back to school to earn my teaching credential and finally, earned a Master's in Administration from National University, Sacramento.

The 2018-19 school year is officially over and behind us. Thanks again for your patience and understanding during these times of transition. Education is very important to me and it is my core belief that education provides opportunity. We at Bishop Unified are committed to giving our students every opportunity to succeed. We believe that students must be challenged with rigorous coursework, critical thinking opportunities and a willingness for all of our educators to connect the curriculum to meaningful learning experiences for everyone.

Bishop is an amazing place. My family is proud to call this community home. Please feel free to contact me as we work together to continue the solid tradition of the Bishop Unified School District. Go Broncos!!! Lots of Changes: I must first acknowledge that ‘change’ is not always a good thing and it down right scares people, especially when it affects your children and/or your job/career; I use this as a filter while implementing change. What we must recognize together is we need some changes for our kids and our community. I’m mentioning this because, quite simply, I need your trust and an open mind. I also realize that trust is earned and not just given. Some terms to start getting used to…The Principal is the home owner, MAP Testing, RIT scores, LCAP, LCFF, team, we are in this together, SBAC, CAASPP (pronounced kay-sip) what’s the solution, let’s fix that…that’s just to name a few.

Looking forward to a great year and being part of this incredible team.
