Steve Elia, President
Steve is currently employed as a Teaching & Learning Program Specialist for AVID. He is a graduate of Vassar College with a BA in English Literature and received his Master’s in Education from National University. He is a parent of three BUSD students, Maximo, Lucia, and Scout. Steve was elected to the board in November 2020, and his term will expire in December 2024.

Virginia Figueroa, Vice President
Virginia has worked for IMACA Head Start preschool for 24 years and has supervised four out of six centers in the Inyo and Mono counties. She attended Cerro Coso Community College in 2005 and was part of the first formal on-campus graduation having completed her degree in Early Childhood Development. Her daughter attended public school and graduated in 2008 from Bishop Union High School. Her term will expire in December 2026.

Dr. Claudia Moya-Tanner, Clerk
Claudia Moya-Tanner works at her family owned businesses. Her son currently attends Home Street Middle School. She obtained her Ph. D. in Pharmacology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. After graduation, she spent several years doing research, lecturing, and mentoring students at UCSB. Claudia was elected to the school board in 2018. Her term will expire in December 2026.

Joshua Nicholson, Member
Josh graduated from BUHS with the Class of 2000.  He went on to honorably serve our country as a Combat Engineer in the U.S. Army for just over 7 years total.  During his last deployment, he earned his Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice with a goal of becoming a peace officer.  During his career as a peace officer, he earned his MBA in Public Administration from Columbia Southern University.  Josh is currently enjoying a new career at Southern California Edison.  He is an experienced board member having served on this board from 2014 to 2018.  Josh is a proud father of 3 and husband of nearly 17 years. His present term will expire in December of 2026.

Katherine Kolker, Secretary to the Board of Trustees

Katherine was hired in April 2020 to serve as the Superintendent of Bishop Unified School District and the Secretary to the Board of Trustees. Prior to accepting the Superintendent position at BUSD, Mrs. Kolker was the Principal for Alternative Education (Palisade Glacier High School, Keith Bright School, and Bishop Independent Study) for 5 years. She has a background in K-12 administration and school counseling.
